Old Bridge by Natan-Estivallet Old Bridge by Natan-Estivallet
Oil on canvas, 40 x 60 cm (16 x 24"), 2012.

The river was made in two phases, the second phase being a varnish with phthalo blue and liquin (alkid resin). This is the first time I try liquin, and I used it only on the water. Tell me what you think!!!

Thanks in antecipation for all of those who comment or fave it! :D :stereo:

Nicely done, though the water seems somewhat separate from the rest of the image, maybe its the vibrancy, maybe its the too subtle reflections. I'm afraid I'm not much help.

No problem! I also think that the blue (in this case phthalo) I used was too strong.

Very pretty, but I think there's something wrong with these reflections, like only the bridge was intended to have a mirror. Anyway, good work.

I tried to let some dark areas in the water, maybe I shoud have painted them more greenish, to look more like a reflexion. Anyway, I will try this motif again in a few weeks! Thanks for your comment!!

Welcome :) Besides, I'm not really into paintings, so my feedback might sound quite amateurish. Pencil drawings are my domain! :D

Lovely scene. Reading the comments below, I think if you made the background trees a lot paler, you would achieve more depth.

Someone gave me the same advice when I joined dA and first started to paint and it has helped me. How long have you been painting? :painter:

My first meeting with oil paints was ten years ago. I painted for two years without any method, I didn't know even what was a pigment (lol). Then I stopped 'cause of graduation stuff and other things. Two years ago I tried acrylic paint, and I really don't like it. You can see in my gallery a folder with some trials I did. :( (Really not good). And I got back seriously, trying to learn and improve with oils sinse may 2011. This painting (Old Bridge) I did in september 2011 and I've modified it some days ago. But, to really make it better I will start with a new canvas in the near future! Thanks for your question!

I tend to switch between oils and acrylic, but have done mostly acrylic lately. Sometimes I start in acrylic and then do oil over the top which gives the best of both worlds sometimes.:painter:

For sure! Let me write it better: I don't like to work with acrylics, but I love beautiful works with acrylics and/or oils, to me it is just easier to work with oils! :D

Yes, I think we all eventually find a medium that we are happiest with.

this is a very evocative scene: it makes me think of summer in New England. one small critique: the depth perception feels a bit wonky. i have the same problem though, which is why i try to get on that. :) i really, really like how you've painted the water in the foreground and the reflection of the bridge.

No problem! I also feel the depth is not good here. And more, to me the sky and the tress in the background are much better than the rest of the painting. I think I will cut the canvas in two!! :D

hmmm. i do think it works as a complete picture; maybe the far side of the pond is a bit closer? i hate depth perception; it drives me crazy. maybe a bit of dark color in the trees would make it seem more 3D? don't take me at my word; you know far more about painting than i do, i promise! :)

Bridge looks nice, don't know if I would want to walk on that if it was real though, but nice nonetheles. I also like the relections and the whole landscape, this looks so calm and inviting.
