'December Waterfall' by Natan Estivallet is a well crafted landscape which has for me a strong surreal element.
Like many visitors to the deviantART site, I spend a lot of time browsing the submissions and stopping for a better look when something jumps out of the screen. With this piece, what catches my eye is the composition.
At first glance this is a classic landscape composition with detailed foreground separated from a distant vista by a well defined horizontal line slightly below vertical centre. Then the observer notices that the trees frame the sky and mountain beyond with an almost perfectly circular window or portal. It is this feature that locks the eye on a point slightly above the distant peak and pulls the observer into the frame.
The surrealism emerges because perfection of shape rarely occurs in nature and the artist takes full advantage of this. The perfect right angle of the river and the slightly exaggerated mist rising from the low fall gives an almost mystic tone to the work.
Apparently good critiques should find some negatives if only to accent the positive. If I were forced to find something I guess I'd point to the shrubbery masking where the river enter on the right. They seem a bit contrived.
Overall I really like this work. The brushwork is finely executed and the composition opens new worlds to explore.
Wow I know I've comment on your art before but I wondered why I didn't watch you before? I'm glad I've found you again and your great art. And yes, Darrell Crow is a great artist and teacher. My influence is from Darrell too and that's what I want, learn more landscape/sky/Ocean and then move on to people add them to the paintings. I'm working on a couple of projects and keep on learning and be able to have my own style. Keep the great job my friend!
Hi, thank you very much for your comment and watch! Glad to know you also like Darrell's teachings and paintings, he is very clear in his explanations, he explains everything in detail. I'm looking forward to see your projects!
